Summertime Fun @ The Dr. Bill Roston Native Butterfly House

By Jessica Delfft July 6, 2017

Did you know that some butterflies are attracted to the salt that is found on human skin which makes them more likely to land on you?

As you might have guessed, we made a stop at the Dr. Bill Roston Native Butterfly House this week and we had a great time. This gem is a great way to add some quick magic into your week. The Butterfly House only houses butterflies that are native to Missouri and they sure have an impressive collection to show off.  They also have a caterpillar display to highlight different types and sizes of caterpillars.

Think you would like to give the butterfly house a try? Here are a few tips for your visit.

  • It is free to visit but donations are always welcome.
  • It is not a very large space so you will probably want to leave extras such as bags, purses, and strollers in the car so that you can be free to explore.
  • Be sure to talk to the volunteers and ask questions. They are a wealth of knowledge about all things butterflies.
  • Be on the lookout for all stages of the life cycle. We spotted some caterpillar eggs and viewed butterflies that recently emerged from their cocoons.
  • The hours for the house can vary but they should be open daily for the summer season, 10-5 on weekdays and 10-6 on weekends.
