A Date With My Kid in Springfield, MO

By Larry Blunk, Contributor for Macaroni Kid Springfield MO March 19, 2019

My daughter and I are always looking for really fun things to do when we get a day together for a daddy/daughter date. Our activities usually include a variety of both indoor and outdoor activities because, as you know well, the weather can switch in a moment in the city with the most variable weather in the country! My little girl is three and quite inquisitive, which means it takes a lot to have her engaged for longer than five minutes!

First: Bass Pro Wonders of Wildlife Aquarium

Our first stop for the day was the fantastic aquarium at Bass Pro  - Wonders of Wildlife. Voted America's Best Aquarium, it is easily one of the coolest things to see in Springfield! The aquarium is amazing and engages children of all ages through its variety of interactive exhibitions. She really enjoyed the backlit jellyfish aquarium as well as the aquarium ‘globe’ where she loves to see the "Nemos." Based on our many trips here, I think two hours is the optimal time for her here. It’s a nice place to getaway when the weather is not so kind outdoors too!

Next: Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park

For the sunny afternoon, we made our way over to Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park. It’s on the west side of town, just near Sunshine and West Bypass. A homestead that is recreated, this brilliant property has a host of entertainment appropriate for kids of many ages - and there is no cost! From the animals, the farm equipment (she especially loves the tractors on display), to the barn-play area, everything here is well curated and really engages her mind! During various days and sessions, visitors can even interact with the animals on rotation. She loved the pigs, chickens, cows, and horses.

Finally: Aviary Cafe for Dinner and Dessert

After an exhausting full day of running around town, nothing delighted our sweet tooth more than one of the amazing desserts served at Aviary Cafe! Of course we had dinner as well (her favorite crepe is the Farmer - bacon, eggs, cheese, amazing!), but the chocolate mousse was really over the top! Not only was the presentation great, but this dessert was perfect in every way! They have two locations, one downtown and one in Farmer’s Park - we opted for the latter.

I truly hope you enjoyed a bit of how my daughter and I entertain ourselves when we have a day together!
