Make it more than a walk in the woods!
The Library has filled 20 backpacks with all the tools you need to explore the great outdoors, or just a nearby city park.
They’re at the Republic Branch Library, or available by requesting one through thelibrary.org/catalog and search Nature Exploration, Birdwatching, or Adventure Backpack.
There are two kinds of backpacks that families with elementary-age children can enjoy for a three-week checkout.
Adventure Backpack: Nature Exploration: “Backpack Explorer: On the Nature Trail” book; binoculars; “Daniel Finds a Poem” book; a Dip Net; Field Guides, 3; “Flow, Spin, Grow: Looking for Patterns in Nature” book; Leave No Trace Ethics Card; “Let’s Go Outside!” book; magnifying glass; and a Port-O-Bug container.
Adventure Backpack: Birdwatching: “Backpack Explorer: Bird Watch” book; binoculars; “Bird Builds a Nest: A First Science Storybook” book; “How to Find a Bird” book; Leave No Trace Ethics Card; Missouri Birds Field Guide; and “National Geographic Kids Look and Learn: Birds” book.
The Adventure Backpacks were funded by Gregory S. Beard and the Republic Walmart and developed by the staff of the Springfield Greene County Library District.

Solve Nature’s Mysteries this Summer – Be a Nature Detective!
Registration starts June 1 at thelibrary.org/kids to join Nature Detectives this summer and receive a special kit with a field guide, bug box and other tools to explore the outdoors this summer. Complete the field guide, create a new collection and record your adventures! Stop by your favorite library branch throughout the summer and tell us how your project is going, then bring your field guide back for display at the Library Station or the Library Center during the month of August. A Nature Detective kit will be sent to registered participants at your favorite branch for you to pick up.
Tuesday, June 22, 6:30 p.m. Bird Songs & Behaviors
For grade 6-adults. It's the time of year for bird song and nesting! During this virtual program, Sue Schuble, Greater Ozarks Audubon Society member and world birder, will show how to recognize local birds and their songs and the unusual mating displays of birds worldwide. Register beginning June 8 at thelibrary.org/programs. A link will be shared with registered participants.
Wednesday, June 23, 6:30 p.m. Save the Pollinators: Pollinator-Friendly Gardening. For grade 6-adults. Learn about a variety of animal pollinators, why they're important and how to attract them to your garden, from Krissy Sinor, Library staffer and beekeeper. Register beginning June 6 at thelibrary.org/programs. A link to the virtual event will be shared with registered participants.
