Sensory-Friendly Activities in Springfield for Kids

By Macaroni KID Springfield MO July 26, 2024

Every family deserves to find activities and places where everyone can feel included, supported, and have fun together. Families with special needs children often face unique challenges in this search, but Springfield, Missouri, is a city that warmly embraces diversity and inclusion. From museums to calming outdoor spaces, this list highlights wonderful places and events that ensure every family member can enjoy enriching experiences together in the Springfield area.

Incredible Buddies at Incredible Pizza Company

The Incredible Pizza Company provides a fun-filled experience for the whole family. This entertainment center features an array of games, rides, and activities. The first Saturday of each month is designated as Sensory-|Friendly Saturday, with lower stimulation lights and sounds. The staff is trained to assist families with special requirements, and quieter areas are available for those who need a break from the excitement.

Sensory-Friendly Movie Screenings

Several cinemas in Springfield offer sensory-friendly movie screenings. During these showings, the volume is lowered, lights are dimmed but not completely darkened, and viewers are welcome to move around and make noise. This inclusive experience allows families to enjoy the latest movies together without feeling restricted or judged.

Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park

Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park is a serene and inclusive outdoor space that provides numerous recreational opportunities. The park features wheelchair-accessible paths, a sensory garden, a butterfly house, and a variety of "play pods" throughout the park. Families can enjoy picnics, walks, and nature exploration while appreciating the tranquil beauty of the park.

Calming Kits at Springfield-Greene County Libraries

The Springfield-Greene County Libraries are often busy buildings filled with noise, lights and many people. Visiting a library can be difficult for children with sensory issues, including those with autistic spectrum disorder and developmental disabilities. The 10 Library branches have introduced Calming Kits to help make their visits more successful. Families with children who may feel anxious or overwhelmed when visiting a library can check out one or more of the items in the Calming Kit.

The Kits include noise-canceling headphones, wiggle cushions, weighted lap pads and other items designed to calm, assure and channel energy.

Sensory Friendly Saturdays at History Museum on the Square

The second Saturday of each month is Sensory Friendly Saturday. During this time frame, lights in the museum will be dimmer, sound will be quieter, and quiet spaces will be available in the museum. Please contact the museum ahead of time for a sensory map or social story to prepare for your visit!

Sensory Friendly Playtime at Imaginasium

Imaginasium is a creative play space designed to engage children of all abilities. They set aside an hour every Monday morning for a sensory friendly hour of play. This is by appointment only so it can be kept small and comfortable for everyone. They will dim the lights, play softer music, and keep it calm for those with sensory sensitivities so they can have some time to play without large crowds. Email Imaginasium417@gmail.com or call 417-368-2908 to schedule your play time.
