A Tooth Development Guide For Your Baby

February is National Children's Dental Health Month

February 21, 2024

As babies grow, it’s important for parents to know if their child’s teeth are developing correctly.
Dr. Stuart Scott and our team at Parkcrest Dental Group wants to share a tooth development guide to help parents know if their child’s teeth are developing appropriately, for a healthy smile!

Teething Timeline

The teething process varies for children. Some babies begin teething at a few months, while some at 12+ months. Don’t be too worried if your five-month-old isn’t teething. Every child develops differently, and it’s important to keep this in mind with the teething timeline included!

  1. Front Teeth: Babies get bottom front teeth first from 6 – 10 months. Next, your child will get the top two front teeth between 8 - 13 months.
  2. Central and Lateral Incisors: Between 8 - 16 months, your child will likely develop central incisors (on either side of the two front teeth.) The lowers appear first, followed by the top. The teeth next to central incisors (lateral incisors) generally develop between 13 and 19 months.
  3. Upper and Lower Molars: At the back of the mouth, normally appear around 13 - 19 months. The second set of these normally come in around 16 - 23 months.
  4. Canines: The canine teeth, which are the sharper teeth located beside the lateral incisors normally appear between the ages of 16 and 23 months.

Losing Primary Teeth

Your child should begin losing primary teeth around 6 years of age or so; when your child does lose teeth, be sure you have prepared them and are supportive. Reassure them that this is a normal process of becoming a big kid!

Permanent Teeth Timeline

Children begin to get adult teeth between 6 – 13 years old. If your child is far off the timeline below, contact your dentist to see if your child’s teeth are coming in correctly.

  1. First Molars - normally emerge around the age of 6 or 7.
  2. Central and Lateral Incisors - emerge between 6 - 8 years old.
  3. Canines – develop from 9 – 13 years old.
  4. Molars - These teeth normally come in between 9 – 13 years old.
  5. Wisdom Teeth - normally between 17 - 21 (although sometimes they don’t come in at all.)
