Safely Storing and Handling Breastmilk

By Janel Plunkard, IBCLC | Publisher of Macaroni KID Springfield MO April 26, 2024

Understanding how to safely store and handle breastmilk helps to ensure the health and well-being of our babies. Whether you're pumping milk for occasional use, storing for future needs, or you're storing donor milk, following proper guidelines is essential. Let's dive into the basics of safely storing and handling breastmilk according to current health recommendations.

In establishing guidelines for safely storing and handling breastmilk, it's crucial to consider principles of food safety. Just like any perishable food item, breastmilk can be susceptible to bacterial growth if not handled properly. By adhering to recommended storage temperatures and sanitation practices, we can minimize the risk of contamination and ensure the safety of breastmilk for our little ones. These guidelines are informed by the current research in microbiology and food safety standards, aimed at preserving the nutritional integrity of breastmilk while safeguarding against potential pathogens.

  1. Clean Hands and Equipment: Before expressing breastmilk, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure all pumping equipment, including pump parts and storage containers, is clean and sanitized.
  2. Use Sterile, BPA-Free Containers: When storing breastmilk, opt for BPA-free containers specifically designed for milk storage. These can include glass or hard plastic bottles, or breastmilk storage bags. Ensure that containers are sterile before use.
  3. Label and Date: Always label expressed breastmilk with the date it was pumped. This helps you keep track of freshness and ensures you use the oldest milk first. Use waterproof labels and non-toxic ink for safety.
  4. Proper Storage Temperatures: Freshly expressed breastmilk can be stored at room temperature for up to four hours. If refrigerated at temperatures of 40°F (4°C), it can be safely stored for up to four days. For longer storage, freezing is necessary. Use the back of the freezer, where the temperature is most consistent, and avoid storing milk in the freezer door. Using a separate deep freezer is ideal for longer storage.
  5. Thawing and Warming: When thawing frozen breastmilk, do so gradually by placing it under warm running water. Don't microwave breastmilk, as it can create hot spots that could burn your baby's mouth. Instead, gently warm breastmilk it by placing the container in a bowl of warm water. You can also use a bottle warmer, but be cautious of overheating.
  6. Discard Unused Milk: Once breastmilk has been warmed or thawed, it should be used within two hours. Any milk left unconsumed after a feeding should be discarded.
  7. Transporting Breastmilk: If you need to transport expressed breastmilk, use an insulated cooler bag with ice packs to keep it cool. Avoid leaving coolers with milk in a hot car or direct sunlight for extended periods.
